Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist, Pain Medicine (Algology) Specialist and Pediatric Rehabilitation Specialist

Prof. Dr. Birol Balaban was born in Ankara in 1968.

In 1992, he graduated from Gülhane Military Academy of Medicine (GATA) as a Medical Doctor.

In 2000, he successfully completed his residencing education and became a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist.

Between 2002 and 2003, he studied child rehabilitation at the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department of Denver Children's Hospital, Colorado University, United States.

At the same time, in 2003, he had the opportunity to develop his knowledge and skills in Interventional Pain techniques by fellowship at spine center of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

In 2004, he started to work as a Faculty Member in GATA Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He made serious efforts in the creation of institutional and national health service infrastructure and medical education in the subject of Child Rehabilitation.

In 2006, he was successful by the Interuniversity Board Associate Professorship Exam Jury and received the title of University Associate Professor.

In 2007, he was successful in his exam and was eligible for a European Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Qualification Certificate.

In 2011, he was entitled to become an Algology Specialist as a result of the evaluation conducted by the Medical Specialization Board.

In 2014, he was appointed to the professor staff.

As an academic study, there are many articles, papers and book chapter writings nationally and internationally. He attended many scientific congresses, conferences and meetings as invited speakers and instructors.

His clinical trials focus specifically on cerebral palsy and child rehabilitation, walking and posture analysis, fever rehabilitation, low back pain and interventional pain techniques. In addition to increasing professional development and experience by making post-graduation training and study visits to important centers in Both Europe and America in the fields of Child Rehabilitation and Pain Treatment, he has made significant contributions to the promotion of his country among international academicians by carrying out joint projects with his colleagues here.

He was awarded a congressional incentive award by the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine for his work in pediatric rehabilitation. One of his articles in the field of Cerebral Palsy and Walking Evaluation was selected as a post-graduation training paper for physicians by the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Association of Rehabilitation Academicians, while another received the best presentation award by the scientific board of the National Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Congress.

In 2013, he published the first Turkish source book in Turkey called "Pediatric (Child) Rehabilitation".

He has made considerable efforts to establish and develop the Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit at GATA Rehabilitation Center. GATA is the first physician within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center to apply algaeological (pain) treatment techniques accompanied by fluoroscopy in clinical routine and conduct academic studies. He is also one of the faculty members who served in the establishment of the "Muscle-Skeletal System Interventional Pain Unit".

He has served in Brain Damage and Acute Rehabilitation Unit at GATA Rehabilitation Center - The Neurological Rehabilitation Department. Most recently, while conducting the Chief of Pediatric Rehabilitation and Acute Rehabilitation Clinics and Medical Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory, he voluntarily left his position at GATA and established the PhysioCare Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medical Center. At the same time, he continued to serve as an academician in university staff.

Currently, he is a faculty member at the European University of Lefke. As an academician who has been carrying out the treatments of children and adults who have developed physical disabilities due to various reasons for many years and who strives to regain their health, he has worked hard in the establishment of the Foundation for Health and Education of Children with Physical Disabilities (ENSEV) in 2000, taking his work in this field beyond being a professional job at the university; still continues his voluntary work in the institution as The Foundation President.
